A motorist Paul Neelan is scheduled to appear in court today after ramming a Ford Transit van into a police patrol car seven times on New Year’s Day, injuring three officers.

Paul Neelan, 29, has been charged with two attempts to inflict aggravated assault on Coventry officers after being released from hospital yesterday.

The unemployed driver was also charged with two incidents of reckless driving after alleged that he also deliberately crashed into a second police car.

Neelan, who is from Cedars Avenue in town, continued to be charged with driving during the disqualification. He will appear this morning at Coventry Magistrates’ Court.

Three West Midlands police officers sustained back and neck injuries, but none were seriously injured in the incident on Hummingbird Avenue at 1:30 a.m. on January 1.

Detectives released a photo they described as “shocking” which “shows one of our emergency vehicles destroyed after being repeatedly hit in Coventry”.

A police spokesperson said: ‘You may recall that on New Years Day we posted a shocking photo showing one of our emergency vehicles destroyed after being repeatedly hit in Coventry . We have now charged a man in connection with the incident.
