Robert and Paula Bateman were traveling with their daughters
Robert and Paula Bateman were traveling with their daughters Lexi, ten, and Elizabeth, 18, when their Ford Focus crashed into Luke Norton’s van.
Both parents were pronounced dead at the site of the horror attack, while their two children survived.
Lexi was helped out of the Ford by Norton and tragically asked witnesses, “Is my father still alive? Please let my mother live.”
Norton had drunk “a great deal of cocaine and heroin”
Norton had drunk “a great deal of cocaine and heroin” the day before the double tragedy of September 3rd.
In drug tests, it was four times the legal limit for benzoylecgonine – the main metabolite of cocaine.
He has now been in jail for eight years and eight months after admitting reckless driving caused the deaths of Robert, 36, and Paula, 35.
The driver also pleaded guilty to driving an automobile with an excessive amount of benzoylecgonine in his blood.
“They stole two children from their parents”
A charge of serious injury to Lexi for reckless driving has been dropped by the prosecution at Peterborough Crown Court.
Judge Sean Enright said: “You stole two children from their parents.”
The court was told Norton was “completely disoriented” when he got behind the wheel of the A142 between Chatteris and Mepal, Cambs.
He had made 15 calls overnight between 10:17 p.m. on September 2 and 7:45 a.m. the next day, including a 20-minute call at 5:15 a.m.
Norton drove straight across the street and got into the Ford Focus around 8 p.m.
When taken to hospital as a precaution, Norton was sluggish and unable to stay awake.
He said he must have fallen asleep while driving, but couldn’t remember feeling tired or sleepy before the accident.
John Farmer, the prosecutor, said: “There is only one explanation, a combination of lack of sleep, drugs, disorientation, and he collapses into sleep.
“There is no steering, there is no braking.
“He is crossing the street in the dark, Mr. Bateman had neither the time, nor the hope, nor the prospect of doing anything.”
In a victim impact statement, Paula’s mother Angela Harper paid tribute to her “wonderful, caring and supportive” daughter who was “loved by all”.
She described Lexi “sitting next to her deceased father and watching her mother die” while feeling compassionate about caring for her little sister.
Angela added: “Two young girls are now the center of my life because one person is so irresponsible that they caused this terrible event which will affect us and many others for the rest of our lives.
“The girls won’t have a father to walk them down the aisle, a mother to share girls’ secrets and have conversations, and no cooking tips for all the amazing cakes she’s made.
“We are in indescribable pain that will never go away, and this pain has affected the rest of my family, Bob’s family and so many amazing friends.
“Not only were two lives taken, but the lives of those who loved him were torn apart.
“Elizabeth will have no memories of her grandparents, no knowledge of how amazing they were and how loving she was. Lexi has memories and I’m afraid they’ll disappear.
“How do you explain that at Christmas, birthdays, Mother’s Day and Father’s Day, the people who should be here to celebrate will never be here again? There will never be a family laugh because this man is acting tonight -the . “
