Philippe Monguillot Died
Philippe Monguillot, 59, died in the hospital, said his daughter Marie. “We decided to let him go. The doctors were in favor and so were we,” she said.
Monguillot was attacked on Sunday in the southwestern city of Bayonne after asking three passengers to wear masks – according to the rules applicable to coronaviruses across France – and trying to check on another man.
Two men were charged with attempted murder, two others for failing to help a person in danger and another for trying to hide a suspect, the local prosecutor’s office said.
The two accused of attempted murder are 22 and 23 years old. They were previously known to the police.
Bayonne’s prosecutor, Jérôme Bourrier, who confirmed the driver’s death, told AFP he would ask that the charges be changed to take into account his death.
Philippe Monguillot Family
The driver’s family organized a silent march in his honor on Wednesday at the bus stop where the attack took place.
His colleagues used the right to refuse to work the day after the attack, but will resume work on Monday in greater security, the local operator said.
This will include a security guard aboard the so-called Trambus, long buses that cross Bayonne and its surroundings in the generally peaceful Basque country.
Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin is due to travel to Bayonne on Saturday to discuss the security situation and meet the drivers.
