A 70-year-old man is accused of murder after he shot and killed three people during a meeting of religious groups in Vestavia Hills, Alabama on Thursday night, authorities said.

The suspect, who occasionally attended St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church, was at a religious event known as “Baby Boomer Potluck” when he drew a gun and opened fire, Vestavia Hills police said at a news conference Friday.

Three people were shot dead: an 84-year-old man who died on the spot, a 75-year-old woman and an 84-year-old woman who later died in hospital, police said.

A church member overwhelmed the suspect until police arrived, which authorities say helped save lives.

Suspect Identified

The suspect, identified by the Jefferson County District Attorney’s Office as Robert Findlay Smith, has been charged with capital murder and is being held without bail at Jefferson County Jail.

One reason is unclear, police said. Authorities believe the suspect acted alone.

The Reverend’s wife, Ann Carpenter, told ABC News that the suspect had been to church most Sundays, adding that he was “sitting in the back” and “didn’t have much to do with anyone.”

About 25 people were there at the time of the shooting, Reverend Douglas Carpenter said.

Victims

Two of the victims were identified: Walter Rainey, 84, and Sarah Yeager, 75.

Asked if he had ever considered a shooting in his church, the reverend replied: “In Saint-Étienne? Why not? It happens in quiet places. This school they shot at was a peaceful place.

Vestavia Hills Mayor Ashley Curry said the community, which is about 7 miles from Birmingham, is “close-knit, resilient” and “loving”.
