Robert Kekaula, a longtime Hawaiian journalist and sports spokesman, died on Saturday morning June 19 with his family. According to family members, Kekaula, the editor-in-chief of KITV4, died at 8.25 a.m. at the age of 56.

Kekaula joins a list of recently deceased journalists. On June 16, Dick Stolley, who published key material about the JFK assassination in 1963, died at the age of 92. Also in June, Christopher Sign, the television host who wrote Bill Clinton’s revelation, was found dead. “We have a heavy heart this morning because our ohana has lost her mighty wings. A Hawaiian sports media superstar, Kekaula began his broadcast journalism career as a weekend sports producer at KGMB. In 1989 he started working for KITV as a weekend sports presenter and reporter. In 1994 he left the station for KHNL and returned to KITV as sports director in 1997. Kekaula previously worked at KITV as a senior editor. Kekaula has been the University of Hawaii football game play-by-play announcer for Spectrum Sports for years. Following the news of Kekaula’s death, Janice Gin, News Director of KITV4 said, “He leaves a legacy as a great communicator, one who understands people of all stripes. He valued the human mind and potential. He loved Hawaii and the culture that made him proud to be a native son of the islands. ”

Members of the sports community used Twitter to offer their condolences after the news. “I can’t believe it. It’s absolutely shocking and sad. One of the most famous characters in all of the Hawaiian sports media. Had a huge impact on all of us. Prayers to his family,” said one. “Robert was truly a sports broadcast legend in the state of Hawaii and as the voice of the University of Hawaii Football. He loved UH sports with a passion.
