The Courier-Journal reports that 25-year-old David Sparks pleaded guilty on Tuesday of murdering Savannah Spurlock, manipulating evidence and abusing a corpse. He is due to be sentenced in December.
As previously reported, Spurlock’s remains were discovered behind Sparks ‘parents’ home in Garrard County in July 2019, “hidden in an unnatural location” and buried in a 19-inch grave. After six months of intensive research for Spurlock, authorities received advice from Sparks’ father, who said he noticed a foul smell behind his house.
Spurlock was last spotted in front of a surveillance camera with Sparks and two other men on January 4, 2019, the night he went missing. They left the other bar in Lexington before South Limestone. According to Rodney Richardson, deputy chief of police for Richmond PD, Spurlock walked out of the bar with the men and ended up at the Garrard County home near the Lick Road case.
Sparks first announced to authorities that he fell asleep the night Spurlock disappeared. He claimed the woman was gone when he woke up. However, the evidence found at the residence suggests that Sparks played a much more sinister role, according to police.
In July, detectives said they saw Walmart security videos showing Sparks buying a carpet. Investigators found Spurlock buried in a rug that looked like the one Sparks bought. Detectives also said Sparks texted his sister on the night of Spurlock’s death asking her where he could buy a rug.
Officials added that authorities also found Spurlock’s blood in Sparks ‘parents’ home. Detectives found additional evidence on the property pointing to the suspect, but did not reveal what else they found.
“It was recently known that these items were only checked by two people, the missing person and the above-mentioned people,” said a citation from WKYT.
Spurlock, mother of four, gave birth to twins in December. Her mother, Ellen Spurlock, who lived in Richmond with her daughter, babysat the children the night Spurlock went to the bar.
Ellen Spurlock previously told ABC that she spoke to her daughter on FaceTime around 3 a.m. the morning she went missing. The worried mother said she could hear other people in the car with Spurlock, but her daughter appeared to be fine.
“She seemed fine,” said Ellen Spurlock. “She told me she was fine. When I asked where she was she said she was in Lexington. She promised to return later that morning. It didn’t sound unusual.
Sparks is the only suspect in this case.
