A white man was sentenced to life in prison Thursday for stabbing a black student on the University of Maryland campus in a racist crime, prosecutors said.

In December 2019, a Prince George County jury found Urbanski, 25, guilty of first degree murder.
Prince George County District Attorney Aisha Braveboy said in a statement that Urbanski was a member of a racist social media group and chose Collins to attack a bus stop.
Prosecutors said a mixture of alcohol and racist propaganda motivated Urbanski to crack down on black hatred.
Defense lawyer John McKenna told the court his client was drunk and there was no evidence or testimony to support a racist motive for the murder.
A judge dismissed a hate crime charge against Urbanski before the jury began to deliberate and ruled that prosecutors had failed to meet their legal burden of proving the racial hatred that motivated Urbanski to stab. Collins.
In a law named after Collins, Maryland recently tightened its hate crimes law so prosecutors wouldn’t have to prove that hate was the only motivator to commit a crime.
