Union County prosecutors have charged Andrew Burr, 21, with murder in connection with the death of Shaquin Ingram, 22.
The victim and the suspect both live in the same apartment complex in Elizabeth. It was not clear on Monday whether they were acquaintances.
Burr’s arrest was announced on Friday.
Ingram’s body was found around 11:30 p.m. on January 4. Police were sent to her home after relatives demanded a social check.
Authorities found the young woman in the apartment seriously injured, and soon after, paramedics declared Ingram dead at the scene.
“An investigation, conducted by the [Union County Homicide] task force and supported by members of the Elizabeth Police Department and the Union County Sheriff’s Crime Scene Unit, resulted in the identification of Burr as a suspect in the case without incident which was taken into custody at his home on Wednesday evening, ”the statement from the prosecution indicated.
Ridge is held without obligation. In addition to murder, he was charged with two unspecified firearm offenses.
He has yet to appear before a judge to argue the charges he faces. If found guilty, he could be sentenced to life imprisonment.
Burr has yet to hire a defense attorney to speak on his behalf.
Ingram studied to be a nurse. She graduated from Linden High School in 2016.
“This was a brutal crime that cut short a clearly promising young life,” Acting Union County Prosecutor Lyndsay V. Ruotolo said. “While this arrest does not bring Ms. Ingram back, we hope it will be of some comfort to her loved ones.”
