Vanity Fair reported that Ducklo reacted angrily to an unofficial phone call with Tara Palmeri from Politico while covering her relationship with Alexi McCammond, an Axios reporter who Ducklo met while reporting on the Biden campaign.
“I’m going to destroy you,” Ducklo allegedly told Palmeri on the phone call, also making misogynistic comments suggesting that she was “jealous” that an unidentified man was interested in McCammond and not her.
“TJ Ducklo apologized to the reporter with whom he had a heated discussion about his personal life. He is the first to realize that this is not the standard of conduct set by the president,” the secretary told the White House press. Jen Psaki in a statement following the release of the Vanity Fair report.
“In addition to his initial apology, he sent the reporter a personal note expressing his deep regret. With the approval of the White House chief of staff, he was suspended for a week without pay,” she said. “Even after his return, he will no longer be assigned to Politico reporters.”
News of Ducklo’s relationship with McCammond was featured in an article in People magazine this weekend. The two met during the campaign, and McCammond has since been removed from reporting by the White House in Biden to avoid a conflict of interest, the report said.
Politico reported on Playbook earlier this week that the publication contacted the White House about the story weeks before the People story was published.
However, the Vanity Fair story posted on Friday provided new details about the process. The outlet reported that Ducklo wanted to intimidate Palmeri in an attempt to kill the story.
When a Politico editor contacted the White House about the comments, Psaki, Kate Bedingfield, White House Director of Communications, and Anita Dunn, Senior Advisor, admitted Ducklo had acted inappropriately, but asked why Palmeri disclosed the contents of an informal appeal have.
Ducklo’s behavior has drawn particular attention as President Biden made comments on his first day of service and warned staff and officials that they should treat others with respect.
“I’m not kidding when I say this: if you ever work with me and I hear you disrespecting another colleague or talking to someone, I promise I’ll fire you immediately – in the field.” No ifs and buts or buts, ”said Biden in a virtual swearing-in ceremony on the day of the dedication.
“Everyone has the right to be treated with decency and dignity,” he said. “This has been sorely missed for the past four years.”
