An Alabama man was charged with murder after experts identified human remains found in a forest as that of his ex-wife, who has been missing for five years.
The Elmore County sheriff’s office said Kimberley ‘Starr’ Mulder, 53, was last seen on June 11, 2016 while traveling to Birmingham for medical treatment.
She is believed to have been picked up from her house in Wetumpka, which she shared with her ex, but never got to her destination.

Investigators found “tiny” traces of his blood in Whitehurt’s vehicle and garage at the time, but without the body at this point, they decided not to pursue the case any further.
Deputy chief Jeremy Amerson told Fox News that Kimberley’s family had been waiting for a response to his disappearance since 2016, but that it was “difficult to hunt someone without a body”.
Last year, authorities investigating the disappearance of Kimberley discovered human remains in the Conecuh National Forest, 130 miles from their home.
The body was found to have a small-caliber pistol bullet hole between the eyes, and last week forensic investigators identified the body as Kimberley.
After DNA tests were performed on the recovered body, the remains matched the blood found in Whitehurt’s vehicle.
Amerson said, It wasn’t until the evidence came back from the [Alabama] Forensic Science Department that they said it was actually a woman from Elmore County who was listed as missing. ”
Whitehurst, currently held on $ 1 million bail, was stopped in his car by officials while driving to work after lawmakers waited outside his home.
Speaking to AL.com, Sheriff Bill Franklin said Whitehust knew he played a major role in the mystery when agents first investigated the disappearance.
“The detective told him that the next time we visit we would likely get a warrant for the murder, and that’s exactly what happened,” Franklin said.
