Vorayuth Yoovidhya has been accused of crashing his Ferrari into a policeman, Wichien Klanprasert, in 2012 and dragging his body tens of meters before escaping.

Authorities unexpectedly dropped the case in July, aroused public anger and launched a government review.

Prayut Phetkun, spokesperson for the deputy attorney general, said the prosecution has been stayed on previous charges of Vorayuth’s fatal reckless driving and a new charge of cocaine use.

“There was evidence that Vorayuth was driving fast and using drugs before the incident,” Prayut told Reuters on Friday.

The attorney general’s office will ask police to prosecute Vorayuth for drug use by September 2022 and reckless driving by 2027, he said.

Vorayuth missed eight subpoenas before authorities issued an arrest warrant five years after the incident. He later apparently disappeared overseas, according to social media posts.

Last month, a Thai court issued a new arrest warrant.

Vorayuth, the grandson of the late Chaleo Yoovidhya, creator of Krating Daeng, or Red Bull, energy drinks, was 27 years old at the time of the accident.
