Rapper Zebra Katz Biography                                               Zebra Katz Wiki

Ojay Morgan (* 1987), better known as Zebra Katz, is a Berlin-based Jamaican-American rapper, producer and songwriter who has worked with artists such as Busta Rhymes and Gorillaz. His career began in 2012 when fashion designer Rick Owens showed Zebra Katz’s song “Ima Read” in a loop at Paris Fashion Week 2012. Morgan describes himself as queer.

Musical style

Throughout his career, Morgan has openly spoken out against the “queer rap” genre, which was shaped by Pitchfork and other publications classifying Zebra Katz and artists such as Mykki Blanco and Le1f. While Morgan says that without his sexuality he would be generally classified as a “rapper”, Morgan claims that the inherently homophobic genre is pigeonholing for musicians. In this sense, his music was classified as contrary to genre.

Ima Read

Although he doesn’t have a strong personal relationship with voguing, Morgan says the movement was forced upon him to provide context for “Ima Read”. The connection between voguing and track was fueled by the 20th anniversary of the ballroom scene documentary Paris is Burning and the popularization of voguing in 2012. Morgan loves ballroom culture / voguing. He performed at the GMHC House of Latex Ball in 2012, supports House of Vogue founder DJ MikeQ and is a founding member of the House of Ladosha.

Less Is Moor

Inspired by James Baldwin, Grace Jones, Nina Simone and Little Richard, Zebra Katz’s 2020 debut album, Less Is Moor, pays homage to the minimalist approach often demanded by artists of color. Morgan illustrates this by saying that non-white people are generally expected to be more resourceful than their white counterparts. With elements from hip-hop, drum ‘n’ bass and electronic music, Less Is Moor aims to channel Katz’s biting lyrics into his biting rhythms.

The basis for the album Less Is Moor came about when Morgan was studying at the New School’s Eugene Lang College of Liberal Arts. His thesis project “Moor Contradictions” was a performance of monologues and raps, including “Ima Read”, by various personalities created by Morgan. One of those characters is Zebra Katz, who Morgan says came into being as a result of his identity obsession thesis. Since then, Morgan has battled the various boxes and typecasts created by his fellow human beings.

The title of the album is inspired by the moors.
